In the Ozarks Flora, “black” is “dark brown to black, occasionally with paler marginal zone”. The alternative is “white to tan or becoming pale brown centrally”. It would seem that yours qualifies as “black”. Back to spot tests to distinguish the alternatives there, I guess.

The last photo was my attempt (not too successful) to show lower surface of this specimen. Using keys in J.Thomson “Lichen of WI”, pale lower surface for non-isidiate species would indicate Xanthoparmelia cumberlandia (also X.viriduloumbrina, but it looks different), while black lower surface would indicate Xanthoparmelia tasmanica or Xanthoparmelia angustiphylla, neither of which I’m familiar with. I’d say the lower surface (see the small piece in the middle of the last photo) is blackish here.
