Summary: Kind of hurried this a.m. (re-edited)

White cap with yellowish or brownish disc, white warts, ring on stipe originally pulled up in funnel shape, pantherina-type “rolled sock” volva above bulb, rather long marginal striations on cap margin —> sect. Amanita. Spores will be inamyloid. In the east, we’re seeing lots of this species, this year…for some reason.

Now, I’ve got the errands done.

Note that in the eastern U.S. there are a couple of other taxa that look very much A. multisquamosa. In particular, A. albocreata appears very similar; but a major distinction is that A. albocreata is EXANNULATE from the get go and is known largely from Canadian Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis)- hardwood forest. The reader should also, check in the NJ Pine barrens illustrated checklist here and the Great Smoky Mountains Nat. Pk. illustrated checklist here.

In these two checklists will be found provisional (e.g. A. praecox Lamoureux nom. prov.) and “numbered” species that are somewhat similar in appearance to A. multisquamosa. If any questions remain, I can be contacted through this site.

Very best,

Rod Tulloss
