Notes: with Hypnum subimponens, on near vertical rock above the river, Elwha River valley
McCune and Geiser (2009) note “The role of this species as a soil-stabilizing and nitrogen-fixing pioneer on abused soil and not been fully appreciated. Most pimple do not look carefully at the blackish gelatinous growths so common along gravel roads and roadcuts w Cas. This blackish material is usually L. palmatum and, in some cases, non-lichenized Nostoc. The latter can be lobed but is relatively amorphous and jelly-like.”
