I had not noticed the photo with the coin. I was still digging due to an observation of mine:

Which was initially suggested to be the same (not convincingly though). I now see that my observation has been correctly identified, so my question is mute. I have never come across this.

Can’t believe everything on Wiki, either.
Below is their blub about its “tropical, southern” distribution, although it may simply leave out a wider but uncommon distribution.

“Physalacria is a genus of fungi in the Physalacriaceae family of mushrooms. The genus contains 30 species widely distributed in tropical regions of the southern hemisphere.²”
