Notes: Ok, not sure if there are two different species here. The bottom photo is what I recognize as quercophilus, with the little brown spot on the cap, and the dark hair like stipe.
The first photos, in the field and at home, seem to be very similar. But the caps are more white, and the stipe is slightly thicker, half whitish clear, with only the base dark.
But I don’t know, maybe the whiter cap and clear stipe is just a younger developing version of the mushroom.
10/24/2007 – After discussion with Dr. Desjardin about these this year, it turns out the white small ones, are not young M. quercophilus, but Hemimycena sp., and probably undescribed from CA, since no one has done work on this genus here, yet. Looking at the photos here, it looks like I have two mixed up, and I need to separate the photos to two different observations.
