Notes on Taxonomy:

A brief description of the details surround this name and A. francheti is given in Jenkins Amanita of North America, 1986:

Amanita francheti (sic) is the correct name for what has been called Amanita aspera. The type of Amanita aspera (in Persoon’s herbarium) is Lepiota acutesquamosa. Fries’ description in 1821 has no mention of yellow volval remnants, a very important feature for this species. Therefore, the earliest species name for the “__aspera__” concept is francheti (Boud.) Fayod.”

It is likely that David Arora was aware of this impending publication since he mentions A. francheti in a comment next to the color picture in the second edition of Mushrooms Demystified which was published the same year. However, even though the spirit is correct it appears the exact detail was missed. I believe the actual correct name is Amanita franchetii. Unfortunately I have not had a chance to read the original description by Boudier, but it appears that the majority of recent texts and on-line resources favor this spelling.

Literature with relevant species:

Arora, D. 1986. Mushrooms Demystified, 2nd Edition. Ten Speed Press, Berkeley, California. 959 pp. Lists the speices as Amanita aspera, but mentions Amanita francheti as a possible alternative in a comment next to the color photo of the species.

Breitenbach, J., and F. Kranzlin. 1995. Fungi of Switzerland Volume 1 Agarics 2nd part. Verlag Mykologia, Lucerne, Switzerland. This text uses Amanita francheti (Boud.) Fay. and lists Amanita aspera (Fr.) Gray as a synonym.

Jenkins, D.T. 1986. Amanita of North America. Mad River Press, Eureka, CA. This text uses Amanita francheti (Boud.) Fayod and discusses why Amanita aspera is incorrect.

Lincoff, G.H. 1981. The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms. Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., New York. This text uses Amanita aspera (Fr.) Quel.

Moser, M. 1978. Keys to Agarics and Boleti. English translation by R. Phillips, 1983. The Whitefriars Press Ltd., Tonbridge, UK. This text uses Amanita aspera (Fr.) Hooker.

Phillips, R. 1991. Mushrooms of North America. Little, Brown and Company, Boston, MA. This text uses Amanita franchetii (Boud.) Fayod, but has a typo in on the color plate where it lists it as Amanita franchetti. The next also mention the synonymy with Amanita aspera (Fr.) Quel.

Thiers, H.D. 1982. The Agaricales (Gilled Fungi) of California. I. Amanitaceae. Mad River Press. Eureka, CA. This text uses Amanita aspera (Fr.) S.F. Gray.

The CABI biosciences Index Fungorum (http://www.indexfungorum.org/Names/SynSpecies.asp?RecordID=355836, Aug. 31, 2007) lists Amanita franchetii (Boud.) Fayod as the preferred synonym to Amanita aspera Fr.

MykoWeb (http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Amanita_franchetii.html, Aug. 31, 2007) lists Amanita franchetii (Boudier) Fayod (Ann. Sci. Nat. (Bot.) 7: 81. 1889) and mentions Amanita aspera as a misapplied name.
