Small to large mushrooms, collyboid body form, with adnexed gills on a central stipe, spores brown in deposit. Cap with brown, orange, and pink-purple colors, non-hygrophanous. Saprotrophs found on rotting wood. Spores dextrinoid to non-dextrinoid, warted, without a plage. Usually with bitter taste, and turning brick-red-black in KOH.

Different from Pholiota in lacking a viscid or scaly cap, from Cortinarius and Hebeloma as a saprotroph on wood, from Galerina in lacking a plage, and non-hygrophanous and non-striate cap.
