Diagnostic Description:

Shaped like a half circle disc forming a shelf (applanate) sometimes umbonate at the point of attachment, not zoned with concentric colored bands, very hispid aging glabrous when black;
Context lacking a granular central core, bruising brown when exposed;
Pores bruise brown when fresh;
Spores 8-11 × 6-9 um
Habitat: on oak fruiting from wounds or cankers, usually 5 – 15 off the ground.


Uses:

Used to dye fabrics a yellowish color.
