Public Description of Letharia vulpina (L.) Hue
(Latest review: 2011-08-20 18:06:04 EDT (-0400) by jason) Taxonomic Classification: Domain: Eukarya General Description: Common Name: Common Wolf Lichen Bright yellow shrubby fruticose lichen on conifers in montane forests. Looks like a yellow moss from a distance, often covering the entire northern side of a tree. Diagnostic Description: THALLUS: bright yellow to greenish yellow, irregularly angled branches Distribution: Western North America and western Eurasia. Habitat: Open conifer forests in mountains. On both bark and wood, often growing high up. Look Alikes: The only thing that looks anything like it is L. columbianum, with which it often grows.
