Public Description of Lactarius pubescens Fries sensu lato
Taxonomic Classification: Kingdom: Fungi General Description: Cap white-pinkish not zoned, taste sharp, latex white, spore print white to cream, Habitat: found with birch species Look Alikes: Lactarius pubescens latex white not changing or staining, Lactarius pubescens var. betulae latex turning yellow quickly, spore print white to cream, otherwise similar to Lactarius pubescens var pubescens cap also non-zoned, Mycorrhizal with Birch species Lactarius torminosus Mycorrhizal with Birch species, latex white unchanging, Tate very acrid (sharp). Lactarius torminosus var. nordmanensis latex staining gills yellow, (see David Arora). Lactarius subtorminosus latex white, similar to Lactarius torminosus except the taste is mild instead of sharp, and it is lighter in color then L.torminosus(see M.E. Schalkwijk-Barendsen). Lactarius subvillosus pink-oranges cap, bearded when young smoother with age. Lactarius psammicola with orangish zones on cap also bearded Uses: possible edible if pickled, but otherwise not edible, at least not raw.
