Observation: Chroogomphus sp. (Singer) O.K. Mill. (13509)
About Chroogomphus (Singer) O.K. Mill.
Public Description (default) [Edit]
When: 2008-11-03
Collection location: Tomales Bay State Park, Marin Co., California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Ron Pastorino (Ronpast)
Herbarium specimen available

Notes: This specimen is on the large end for this species but it does seem to fit the descriptions. Most of the web photos show lighter colors and the location is more south than usually reported. Bishop pine seemed to be the nearest conifer. Chroogomphus pseudovinicolor was another possibility but it is usually associated with Ponderosa pine according to Arora.
Spores were black(photo added) and about in the size and shape of most of our Chroogomphus species;approx. 15-18 X 6.5-7.0 microns.
Am changing to Chroogomphus sp.

Summary: Don’t think C. tomentosus either.

My main point is the red staining towards the base of the stipe, though. I have not noticed that in my collections. C. tomentosus is quite common in my area.

Summary: doubtful

Not sure what this is. The colors are wrong for Chroogomphus tomentosus and it has not been seen this far south.
