Observation: Dermocybe sanguinea (Wulfen) Gray (1376)
About Dermocybe sanguinea (Wulfen) Gray
When: 2006-12-01
Collection location: Howarth Park, Santa Rosa, California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Debbie Drechsler (debdrex)
No herbarium specimen

Notes:

Found lurking amongst a large troop of coprinus sp. at the edge of a heavily used trail. Sturdy feeling, slightly moist. No others evident nearby. Pileus 1 cm wide, 3 cm tall. Gills same color as pileus, may be attached, rather coarse.

I’m giving this a name, based on Darvin’s comment. It certainly matches the images online!

Summary: Dermocybe sanguinea

I suspect this little red cort is Dermocybe sanguinea also known as Cortinarius sanguineus.

Summary: Need more details

Need to look at photo of gills, and base of stipe. And get a spore print on this one. But if the spore print is brown, this might be a Cort. of the subgenus Dermocybe. There are a number of red capped corts here in CA, and most have yellow or orange brown stipes. One thing is that most of these will stain your fingers red when you rub them.
