Observation: Amanita calyptroderma G.F. Atk. & V.G. Ballen (13840)
About Amanita calyptroderma G.F. Atk. & V.G. Ballen
Public Description (default) [Edit]
When: 2008-11-03
Collection location: Marble Mountain Ranch, Siskiyou Co., California, USA [Click for map]
Who: John Harlan (harlanx6)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: These very large, very distinctive mushrooms are fruiting in large numbers now on fairly flat ground under mixed Douglas fir, madrone, tanoak forest. They don’t seem to care for hillsides. You have to get to them quickly or they are buggy. They are so similar in size and shape to spring coccoras they must be very closely related. Only the cap color is darker.
Nathan, how can I prepare some specimens for you without a dehydrator. They weigh about a 3rd of a pound each.

Summary: Drying without a dehydrator…

If you have a heating vent you can cut them thin and string them with a thread and needle and hang them over the heater. This also works for wood stoves. If that’s not an option, then you could try putting an oven on as low as possible with the door cracked open, but that’s not very fuel efficient.

Are these from the same area as the spring coccoras? If not is there any difference in the tree associates?
