Recognized by sight: as far as I know the true S.coccinea isn’t fruiting in North America but I may err.I personally just found S.occidentalis in eastern U.S.

Summary: Ah, spore size’ll do it.

It looks like spore size will do it. If ave. spore length 20um or less – S. occidentalis, spore length greater than 25um (ave. apr. 32um) – S. coccinea.

Summary: Sarcoscypha coccinea s.s. does occur in California…

I read a paper recently on that very subject. Will provide a link if I find it. In essence, S. coccinea is what we have on the West Coast, while S. austriaca and others in the East.
