Notes: This was id’ed as A. avellaneus using MD, Arora. There is a note in there of a purplish capped Albatrellus, and he names it A. avellaneus. There are other notes on A. avellaneus around here, and it seems that it isn’t a purple form, that this purple form is probably another species, and not sure if it described.

This one didn’t have any significant odor. There were a few of these brought in, it was a good year, for whatever this is.

Recognized by sight: Smith writes (p. 128) about a violaceous brown to brownish gray form that fruits in Idaho. If you remove the dark colors this is a typical form and has the yellow staining of the sheep polypore.

Is this from the same spot, exactly one year later..?
It’s very difficult to accept this as Albatrellus ovinus,
not as Albatrellus subrubescens (Obs 6031) either.
In my opinion, it ought to be DNA-sequenced, thoroughly examined and described as a new species.
