Observation: Agaricus sp. L. (19190)
About Agaricus L.
Public Description (default) [Edit]
When: 2009-03-07
Collection location: Murphy’s Bush, Murphy’s Rd., Manukau City, Auckland, New Zealand [Click for map]
Who: Clive Shirley (myxo)
Herbarium specimen available

Notes: I am left wondering what this is found in a Lowland podocarp forest so is unlikely to be a mycorrhizal. Unfortunately its a bit immature but even so it has brown smooth spores. It is some 70 mm high by 40 mm wide. Can any one suggest a genus as I am left not knowing were to look. I tried keying it out with some generic keys for brown spore fungi and ended up with Pholiotina which I dont think is right as these all seam to be small brown fungi.

I returned two days later and photographed the remaining fungi now a little over mature but this still leaves me puzzled as to what it could be.

Summary: Agaricus arvensis

Thanks Dimitar and Christian,

I believe you are right with it been Agaricus arvensis I have not seen a pale yellow verity before with the bush been a strange habitat for them. Its did have a odd smell which I did not recognize and bruised yellow then brown now that I think about it. The spores are also the right size and shape.

Thanks for your help
Clive

Summary: Very arvensis like…

Not sure whether arvensis is an appropriate name Down Under, but
what I see here is really arvensis like. It should have a rather
weak pleasant, slightly almondish odor, not always easy to
detect. But never unpleasant.

Summary: staining/smell

Did you notice any smell or staining reactions when handled? Great first photo, by the way.
