Observation: Cryptoporus volvatus (Peck) Shear (20701)
About Cryptoporus volvatus (Peck) Shear
Public Description (default) [Edit]
Draft for 2008/2009 EOL University Species Pages Initiative by Lauren Z (private)
Draft for Wild Mushrooms of the Northeastern United States by Herbert Baker (private)
When: 2009-04-28
Collection location: Forest near Elgin St., Pembroke, Ontario, Canada [Click for map]
Who: Paul Derbyshire (Twizzler)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: A dead tree near one of the false morel patches is showing signs of producing a crop of conks this year. At least two species seem to be represented. More photos throughout the year as the growth of the conks progresses.

The first image is only a thumbnail.

The third and fourth are from May 11. They had gotten slightly larger. I got a halfway-decent shot of the underside of the largest (~1") one (after many attempts). The fourth photo is what the camera took; the third is cropped to show just the fungus.

It appears to have a partial veil, or something like that.

May 25: new photos. Fruitbodies quit growing so I pulled one off the tree and took it out to the parking lot to cut in half and photograph.

First thing to note: there may be a stem of sorts that was embedded in the tree.

Tubes white. Spore deposit on tough, thick veil looks brown. Tube mouths tinged brown. Next pic, tore a strip off the veil on one half to see brown tube mouths, pinhole-sized circular pores, thick-walled tubes.

Recognized by sight: Looks right, but the image is a bit too blurry and I’d want to see the underside to be sure.

Summary: New photos and fixed thumbnail

I have more photos now, including of the underside and sliced open. Sure looks like C. volvatus. I have also fixed the thumbnail to be more decent.

Summary: 1cm across

Can’t really get good photos of the underside when they’re this small. As they grow I will get more photos, but it will probably take some time.
