Its unfortunate that the quick forays I have down to Kaimanawa Ranges does not give us much time to spend trying to Id fungi. I collected this thinking it was a mycena once back at the motel and looked at the spores (Brown, verrucose). I realised it was something in the Cortinarius group and discarded it. I hope to take a dryer with me next time!

Hi Clive, nice to see your pictures again. I don’t know if you automagically get notified of late comments, but I think this may be a species I found under N-fagus in Reefton, working name Cortinarius lachanus (Greek = vegetable). You didn’t by any chance try the alkaline reaction? If positive, and the gills are yellow as you say, it is a very rare Dermocybe.
