About Boletus edulis Bull.
Public Description (default) [Edit]
Draft for 2008/2009 EOL University Species Pages Initiative by Lauren Z (private)
When: 2009-07-15
Collection location: Forest near Elgin St., Pembroke, Ontario, Canada [Click for map]
Who: Paul Derbyshire (Twizzler)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Found in Zone 05, within three feet of the boundary with Zone 04. Besides the coarse and deep stem reticulation, it’s quite club-footed. At the base of a big old Pinus strobus in an area with Pinus resinosa, Betula papyrifera, and possibly Acer sp. and Betula allegheniensis nearby.

Species Lists:
Mushrooms of Eastern Ontario
Summer Mushrooms of Eastern Ontario
07 – July Mushrooms of Eastern Ontario
Proposed Names: Propose Another Name
Proposed Name User Community Vote
  Twizzler   42% (3)   Eye3
Recognized by sight: Conspicuous stem reticulation
  Tuberale   92% (3)   Eyes3
Recognized by sight: Penny-bun brown cap, suggesting the common name Penny-bun bolete in England; reticulate stipe becoming somewhat bulbous at the base, with abundant litter adhering to the base of stipe. I’d eat it as that.

Summary: It was…

…no bigger than my fist. Isn’t B. edulis larger, and var. grandedulis bigger still?

Summary: What about Boletus edulis var. grandedulis?

This certainly looks a little bit different from var. edulis.
