Notes: The white object embedded in the slime mold is a piece of gum. When I originally spotted this specimen it was about 1330 and the gum was a couple inches beyond the reach of the slime mold. By the time I took the picture at around 1830 the gum had been swallowed by this spreading mass – what a rate of growth!
Being in Cambridge I can’t help but wonder whether some other observer placed this gum strategically specifically to make such estimate! :)
In those few hours the form of the slime had also changed dramatically. At 1330 it looked like a bubbly mat, by 1830 it had the more 3D webbed appearance noticeable in the pictures.
It offers no resistance to finger touch, like jam. But it doesn’t smell of jam, but rather more stinkhorn-ish.
