Observation: Peltigera ponojensis Gyelnik (24019)
About Peltigera ponojensis Gyelnik
When: 2009-08-05
Collection location: Forest near Elgin St., Pembroke, Ontario, Canada [Click for map]
Who: Paul Derbyshire (Twizzler)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Significant patches of this grey-green, leaflike (foliose?) lichen now grow on the ground in Zone 14, a nearly pure stand of quaking aspen with scattered Pinus banksiana and Pinus virginiana about it.

Underside is whitish with rootlike projections (rhizines?).

The only genus name that comes to mind is Parmelia, just from seeing it on leafy/lobed looking lichen obs here. I wouldn’t put any money on it.

Recognized by sight: Big foliose lichens growing on the ground will almost always be Peltigera, the veins and rhizines below confirm. Tomentose upper surface, upturned margins, white below make it almost certainly P. ponojensis. P. rufescens is similar, but would darken away from the margins on the underside, have more matted rhizines, and typically would be smaller-lobed. Both are common in dry pine woods such as this. The “upturned margins” is a difficult character to describe and learn; compare to P. canina group, which is otherwise similar except for the downturned margins.
