Observation: Amanita rhopalopus Bas (25936)
About Amanita rhopalopus Bas
Public Description (default) [Edit]
When: 2009-09-26
Collection location: Wildacres Retreat, Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, USA [Click for map]
Who: debbie viess (amanitarita)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Although Jay Justice called it a daucipes on the ID card, he admitted that rhopalopus was also a possible ID. Fruit body massive and strongly rooting (only partially collected); odor strong and gawdawful. Slight orange coloration to broken stipe context in photo may be a light artifact; I noticed no color in hand. Mushroom too young to produce spores.

opinions from amanitologists most welcome!
