Observation: Agaricales sp. Underw. (26261)
About Agaricales Underw.
Public Description (default) [Edit]
When: 2009-10-04
Collection location: Larch Mountain, Multnomah Co., Oregon, USA [Click for map]
Who: Daniel B. Wheeler (Tuberale)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Found in gravel at side of highway, near milepost 7. Fungi from 2cm to 7cm wide, lots of dirt and leaves on top, forming a humus cap. Can’t tell whether Russula or Tricholoma … yet. An oddity is the black deliquecence in the center of the clump of 5 mushrooms, all of which were very heavy, very hard. Almost looks like a Coprinus grew in the center of the group, then disolved there. But there was no indication of residual stipe. I’ll admit I’m stumped.

Recognized by sight: I agree that it’s not Russula nigricans. It looks and behaves like Russula albonigra. Taste mild or slightly bitter. There are other options if any reddening is noticed before it turns black.

Summary: Dull red

There is some dull reddening on the cap, along with just about every other color imaginable. Can’t get a spore print from it. Amazingly hard, similar to the bone Albatrellus.

Summary: Just added 4 more photos.

More data: gills white or cream-colored, staining/bruising black. Pileus context staining black near worm holes. Base of stipe staining grayish after 4 days. Odor as five days old: unsavory. DISCUSSION: this is unlike Russula nigricans, which I also collected that day. The stipe is quite heavy/thick/solid, gradually either staining black or absorbing the deliquecence previously noted. I have noted the blackening of R. nigricans before. This is more profound and zoned. There is also some light yellowing on the cap, if that helps anyone. Still stumped, but I don’t think this is a Russula.

Summary: I think I still have the material in my collecting bucket.

Need to get (try to get) a spore print from this thingy. Only similarity to something fruiting nearby was Russula nigricans. I don’t think this is that, but have nothing but a gut reaction. Too heavy. REAL heavy.
