Observation: Favolus tenuiculus P. Beauv. (26506)
About Favolus tenuiculus P. Beauv.
When: 2009-09-22
Collection location: Big Thicket, Polk Co., Texas, USA [Click for map]
Who: Ron Pastorino (Ronpast)
Herbarium specimen available

Notes: These were probably the most interesting to me of all the new mushrooms found on this trip. Initially when I saw these pale yellowish mushrooms growing on an old log, a flimsy species of Pleurotus came to mind. However. when I turned them over they had these elongated boletinoid pores.
The spore print was white and inamyloid.
I finally contacted David Lewis in Texas and he immediately identified them as Polyporus tenuiculus and referred me to the Bessettes’ and Millers’ book. Index Fungorum seems to prefer Favolus tenuiculus. Apparently this species is fairly common in the tropics and the Gulf Coast but “Seldom-Illustrated” per the Bessette book.
