Identified by sight. The habitat was an urban lawn with no trees nearby. Generally in California this species is associated with coastal redwoods. However, in Europe this species is associated with grasslands. I saw several fruitings at this site over at least two years. Largent’s section on Hygrophoraceae in Agaricales of California lists this species has having 4-spores per basidia. However, the Fungi of Switzerland mentions a 2-spored description of H. conica, but they were not able to see that feature in the specimens they describe. When I looked at this specimen under the scope as far as I could tell it was 2-spored.
