Observation: Trechispora farinacea sensu lato (34050)
About Trechispora farinacea sensu lato
When: 2010-01-10
Collection location: Point Reyes National Seashore, Marin Co., California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Tom Bruns (pogon)
Herbarium specimen available

Notes: The spiny spores, ampullate septa and general resupinate habit are typical for the genus. The size of the spores 3.2 X 2.5 is right for the species complex. I sent images and measurements to Karl-Henrik Larrson, who works on this group and here is what he said:

“Seeing your photos with the rather crowded hymenophore spines, reminds me mostly about a version of Trechispora farinacea that grows on hardwood in wet places and that I think is a species separate from T. farinacea s.s.”

This collection was on oak (I think) and came from the first bridge on the horse trail during very wet weather, so the habitat that Larrson mentions is almost perfect. The size of the basidia 22 X 3.8 seems unusually long.

Summary: NICE

This is an excellent post. Complete with doubt (which is nice to see), microphotographs, collaborative contact and references. However, I still think you might be making these strange names up. There is still so much to learn!

this is the whole collection

Here is a closeup of the spines

79217
These are the spiny spores and a basidium with really long sterigmata – the length of the basida (22) is atypical for the genus as far as I can tell

79218
a swollen “ampullate” septum, with a clamp visible below, and crystal visible to the left. I had to look a hard to convince myself that ampullate septa occurred and I still have some doubts

??? seems like chlamydospores, but maybe immature basidia
