Recognized by sight: I was going back and forth between nebularis and clavipes last night so I didn’t propose a name. What swayed me to nebularis is because what they call A. clavipes in CA looks nothing like this, it’s a lot more slender and has decurrent gills. This looks sorta similar to our eastern NA one but I still think that nebularis is a better fit

Summary: Re: Lactarius?

I am sorry, I didn’t break the cap to see if it “blead”, however, I did squeeze the stipe which was not crunchy. It seemed as though there were stringy filaments in the stipe. It was also somewhat hollow.

Summary: more thoughts

besides the fact that it must be a slow day if I’m spending all this time on this mushroom…
It looks to gray for L. gentianeus. The cap does look like Lactarius argillaceifolius var. megacarpus but the stipe looks wrong and the duff binding to the base also suggest Clitocybe/Leucopax. etc.

Summary: Leucopax, I thought about that

After I posted, but it didn’t seem large or solid enough.

Not to say that it still couldn’t be.

Summary: Could also be…

I was thinking this could also be Leucopaxillus gentianeus, that was my first thought. Also it kinda looks like a Lactarius maybe… I can’t see enough detail in the photos, C. nebularis could also fit. I saw plenty of those out there last month.
