Summary: mushrooms are variable…

in looks and habit. this one is blushing on the stipe, and also has other typical novinupta characters. not all mushrooms of the same species look the same. if you think that you have a real oddity, you’d better save your mushrooms. otherwise…no real investigation is possible.

Summary: Debbie caught it…

My brain saw an annulus, and I’m so used to talking about A. velosa this year that I typed indistinct. My bad.

Summary: blusher?

Not sure I buy that. I’ve seen a lot of blushers and where they grow they grow in abundance this was all by itself and doesn’t seem to bruise

Summary: certainly a novinupta…

but an “indistinct annulus” is not a feature of this mushroom, like it is in calyptratoides, another fairly common S. CA amanita species.

Novinupta has an often large, pendulous annulus, although this delicate feautre can be lost (like in any annulate amanita). See the many good photos of novinupta on this site to view the many possible manifestations of the novinupta annulus.
