Summary: Agreed

Dan’s link looks like a match. I’d rule out X. hypoxylon or anything like it on account of this combed fibrous look to the outer surface area. I’ve never seen that in a Xylaria before.

Very cool!

Summary: similar observation

This looks like it might be the same kind of Xylaria.

Summary: wintered over

Hi Dave,

Yeah, I just found these a few days ago, in a part of the park I had never explored before. I think they probably came up last fall and wintered over. They look kinda old. The snow has been gone for about a week.

Summary: Wow!

Did you just find these, Dan? How long has your snow been gone? Wonder if these may be old fruit bodies that have survived the winter.

Summary: Or,

maybe another species, it seems a bit large to be X. hypoxylon.
