Observation: Chroogomphus rutilus (Schaeff.) O.K. Mill. (4072)
About Chroogomphus rutilus (Schaeff.) O.K. Mill.
When: 2007-09-14
Collection location: Lake Owen, Albany Co., Wyoming, USA [Click for map]
Who: Barry Hammel (bhammel)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Growing in Lodgepole pine woods at the border with Quaking aspen woods. Occasional.

Growing on the ground, this gill fungus appears to have a dark brown spore print (on the stem), no distinctive smell, but the taste is slightly of almonds. I keyed it very tentatively to Phylloporus using:

Kuo, M. (2007, January). Key to major groups of mushrooms. Retrieved from the MushroomExpert.Com Web site: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/major_groups.html

Summary: Most likely Chroogomphus rutilus

Unless you have a microscope handy, that’s the name I’d apply to it. As Ron says it should have a black or gray spore print, but it could appear dark brown.

Summary: Possibly a Chroogomphus species.

These look like a Chroogomphus species although the spore prints would be more smoky gray to blackish.
