Observation: Amanita sp. (section Amanita) (52129)
About Amanita (section Amanita)
When: 2010-09-05
Collection location: Forest near Elgin St., Pembroke, Ontario, Canada [Click for map] (45.801999° -77.136426°)
Who: Paul Derbyshire (Twizzler)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: An unidentified Amanita from Zone 47 close to 48. Could be associated with pine, Balsam fir, birch, maple, or aspen. Spruce less likely.

It’s white but the resemblance to a destroying angel ends there. The cap has warts — drab greyish warts — and the stipe base is more typical of the muscarioid taxa than of the phalloideae. There is a sizable ring about 3/4 of the way up the stipe and no significant bulb at the stipe base (final photo). Standard-issue Amanita gills: free, white, and plenty of lamellulae.
