Observation: Urnula craterium (Schweinitz) Fries (7421)
About Urnula craterium (Schweinitz) Fries
When: 2008-05-02
Collection location: Kingsbury, New York, USA [Click for map]
Who: Brennen (lqdtrance)
Herbarium specimen available

Notes: This is the first time I have come across this little beauty. I have read that they grow from the ground in europe? I found this similar to the scarlet cups found in the area, growing off of a dead branch buried under leaves. Honestly I do not know much about this mushroom. I only found one and I could not sense any certain “smell”, but my sense of smell isn’t that great. I was unable to get a spore print before it dried.

Summary: Might be Peziza, but hard to say for sure

It looks like it’s either staining or drying black which I’ve never observed in Peziza. You really need microscopic characteristics to be sure of the genus in true cup fungi. From these photos I’m not even confident this is a cup fungus.
