for the supportive comment. These 5 or 6 variipes were mixed in with extensive nobilis and separans fruitings. But, like you say, the brown really jumps out at you.
For many years pre Big Bolete Book, I had confused nobilis and variipes. Back then I had figured that they named variipes as such on account of the highly variable stipe. Perhaps it’s common for the two to grow together. I see you have made a variipes/nobilis contrast post, Bill. Did you find them in the same area?
