for the supportive comment. These 5 or 6 variipes were mixed in with extensive nobilis and separans fruitings. But, like you say, the brown really jumps out at you.

For many years pre Big Bolete Book, I had confused nobilis and variipes. Back then I had figured that they named variipes as such on account of the highly variable stipe. Perhaps it’s common for the two to grow together. I see you have made a variipes/nobilis contrast post, Bill. Did you find them in the same area?

One of the many oak-loving members of the greater edulis clan. Your photos do a good job of showing how the white reticulation at the apex fades to light brown as you look down the stipe. One of the key field marks along with oak habitat, IMHO, for a good ID of variipes.
