Recognized by sight: Dark brown stems. Bulbous stem base. Acute papilla.

Based on microscopic features: Spores 6 – 9 (10.5) x 5 – 6, subrhomboid, often irregularly shaped. Pleurocystidia 17 – 23 × 7 – 9, ventricose to clavate, abundant, hyaline. Cheilocystidia very abundant, hyaline, lageniform with a long neck. 20 – 26 × 6 – 7.
Based on chemical features: Staining blue where damaged. Farinaceous taste and odor.
