Observation: Cortinarius sanguineus (Wulfen) Fr. (83889)
About Cortinarius sanguineus (Wulfen) Fr.
When: 2011-11-06
Collection location: Thoiry, France [Click for map]
Who: Douglas Smith (douglas)
Herbarium specimen available

Notes: Found under spruce, fir.

Blood, vermilion red on stipe, gills, and cap. Non-viscid cap and stipe.

The micro-shot is of spores from the veil at 1000x in KOH. The spores are ellipsoid, warted, brown. The apr. size is 8 × 5 um.

I first thought these were Cortinarius anthracinus, since I had found those in the area before. But looking in Funga Nordica, in the keys, it seems that that taxon is more brown with orange-red colors. See:

http://mushroomobserver.org/observer/show_observation/13374

But the key separates out blood red as a different species, also the spores in the notes are slightly different, smaller here in Cortinarius danicus. The measured spores are right on the ave. for that taxon, and on the very lowest edge of Cortinarius anthracinus. So, I’ll go with the new species for the area.

Seems like I went wrong heading down the key towards Cortinarius anthracinus, and taking a left turn at the blood red. I do have to say these were quite a bit more saturated in all tissues than I’ve seen in Cortinarius sanguineus in the past.

Summary: Very red…

They stained everything red where they touched. Hands, paper, bags, all left with the blood red streaks. Putting the veil under the scope in KOH, the whole thing turned blood red under the cover slip. Just packed with dyes on this one.
