Observation: Agaricus sp. L. (8626)
About Agaricus L.
Public Description (default) [Edit]
When: 2008-07-30
Collection location: Madison Heights, Pasadena, California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Jason Hollinger (jason)
Herbarium specimen available

Notes: small mushrooms, dozen or more scattered in dry lawn, fairly strong industrial/medicinal odor
ST: 30-40 × 4-6 mm, not hollow, readily staining amber-yellow at base, K+ bright golden yellow all over stipe, smooth, whitish
CAP: up to 40 mm wide in maturity, most smaller, becoming broadly convex to almost plane, dry, smooth, shiny, pale buff to sl ightly brownish and some with faint yellowish cast, K+ yellow on cuticle but weak/slow, very little or no sterile margin
VEIL: partial, leaving very weak thin ring material on upper stipe
GILL: free, turning chocolate brown
SPORE: print brown

Note, there is a very similar mushroom a block away which is nearly identical except there is no visible color change when bruised (but it is still K+ vivid yellow on the stipe) and it has a fainter odor. I wonder how variable this species is? The one in the photos is the first one I’ve seen with such an obvious yellow bruise.
