Observation: Schizopora flavipora (Berk. & M.A. Curtis ex Cooke) Ryvarden (86786)
About Schizopora flavipora (Berk. & M.A. Curtis ex Cooke) Ryvarden
When: 2012-01-07
Collection location: Limantour Rd., Point Reyes National Seashore, Marin Co., California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Tom Bruns (pogon)
Herbarium specimen available

Notes: On small bay laural branch

This collection was made by David Rust. When I first looked at it I thought it was just the usual Schizopora paradoxa, which is probably the most commonly collected pored resupinate on conifer wood in our area. However the spore size fits better with S. flavipora, and all other features seem to fit the description in Gilbertson and Ryvarden. However I don’t really know this species, hence the “promising” confidence on the species name.

An interesting comment at the end of their description adds more reason for caution: “The geographic distribution of the species is unclear as it often has been confused with S. paradoxa, and some intermediate specimens occur, especially as to the hymenophore. A detailed study of this genus in North America is highly desirable. W have used the European concept of these studies.”

Species Lists:
Crusts: Fungi with a resupinate or flat sheeting habit (Corticioid s.l. + others)

Proposed Name User Community Vote
  pogon   55% (1)   Eye3Eyes3
Recognized by sight: resupinate with irregular pores breaking up into teeth, cream colored, multiple small resupinate basidiocarps fusing, hardwood substrate, white rot
Used references: Gilbertson and Ryvarden
Based on microscopic features: spore size 4.5-5.1 X 2.6-3.1 fits more with flavipora than paradoxa, lollipop shaped cystidial-like elements; thick-walled hyphae with large lumens. Small clamps throughout.

Summary: Thanks, Tom

I guess it pays to pick up random cool sticks in the woods. Certainly carrying a hand lens to get a field “up close” look is not as good as doing the actual identification and microscopy, but this makes me more determined to focus on the small stuff this year. Thank you for following up.
