Observation: Cortinarius scaurus Group (87439)
About Cortinarius scaurus Group
When: 2011-09-24
Collection location: Yosemite National Park, California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Dimitar Bojantchev (dimitar)
Herbarium specimen available

Notes: This is a relative of Cortinarius montanus, originally described from Oregon. This species here is common in the high Sierra in mossy habitat and I have several collections. Actually, of all our western species this one is the closest relative to Cortinarius scaurus as interpreted by trusted European sources…

Summary: Yep

The veil remnants are prominent in many Phlegmaciums. In some cases they are so thick that look like a coccora – Cortinarius calyptratus comes to mind. I have many photos. In some rare cases they may a leave a sac-like remnant around the bulb, but this is rare..
