Observation: Russula xerampelina group (87455)
About Russula xerampelina group
Public Description (default) [Edit]
When: 2011-09-24
Collection location: Yosemite National Park, California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Dimitar Bojantchev (dimitar)
Herbarium specimen available

Notes: This is the most commonly collected species in the Russula xerampelina clade in California. We (Mike Davis and I) call it Genotype 1, matching the collection R01010 benchmark.

This species is abundant in both the coastal and montane areas. The colors vary from rosy red to dark purplish, but they can pale too. See all attached photographic study.

There are other red Russula xerampelina that are different species though… in Europe and in the PNW.

I believe that the primary host of this shrimp Russula genotype is the Douglas fir, but I do not believe they are exclusive to it.
