Observation: Armillaria sinapina Bérubé & Dessur. (991)
About Armillaria sinapina Bérubé & Dessur.
When: 2006-11-18
Collection location: Los Trancos Preserve, Palo Alto, California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Douglas Smith (douglas)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Ok, this doesn’t really look like the honey mushroom, but I’m not sure else to call this one. It found by itself, and doesn’t really have a veil, but there is veil reminants on the cap edge. The spore print was a creamy white, and there were a lot of spores.

The funny thing is that this was a single mushroom found, but it was attached to a rock under the ground, and it was really attached to that rock. So, it is not a tuber, but just a rock.

If this isn’t a honey mushroom and there is a better idea, please pass it along.

Ok, looking the info from the comment, it does look more like “sinapina”. The veil remanents on the cap, and the single growth seem to point to this species.

Summary: Hey Thanks!

Thanks for looking at These Tom! This adds confidence to the id. These are part of a local study I’m doing for the Open Space Preserve District here in CA, and I’m trying to get as many accurate ids of as many mushrooms as I can from there. This helps!

Summary: Armillaria sinapina

This reddish brown form with a whispy annulus is what seems to be Armillaria sinapina. The best site is Tom Volk’s Key to North American Armillaria Species.
