Have you seen the paper by Amtoft et al (2008) on the Dermatocarpon of the Ozarks? It demolishes the taxonomy by Heiđmarsson and others before. D. miniatum does apparently occur in Minnesota, and therefore likely Wisconsin, too. But what is the difference between D. miniatum and D. muhlenbergii?

Yours reacted red in Melzer’s reagent, something that would normally make it D. americanum, except that Amtoft demonstrated that the Melzer’s reaction is not useful for distinguishing D. americanum and D. muhlenbergii. Amtoft did find that none of their specimens of D. miniatum reacted red in Melzer’s, but refused to categorically confirm that it was useful for characterizing D. miniatum. Thus the I+r reaction of yours may rule out D. miniatum, but no one really knows for sure.

I’ve found that D. muhlenbergii has strongly protruding perithecia, which your specimen has. This is mentioned as common in D. muhlenbergii in the Amtoft et al paper, but unfortunately, they didn’t provide a description for D. miniatum, as that species doesn’t occur in the Ozarks. I’ve been tentatively calling a lot of specimens out west D. miniatum, and none of them have those distinctive protruding perithecia. But who knows if those are really D. miniatum, in the light of these observations and results from the Amtoft et al paper.

Phew. Got all that?

Summary: call it whatever you want, no one has a clue! :)

Perhaps, I was wrong all along, who knows? (apparently Harris does)
