This lichen caught my attention because it was large and can be 3 inches tall. I haven’t seen any lichens that grow out from the rock like this. I saw the same species in another mountain a few miles away. It is common in certain places.

There’s only a specimen of this genus known from the Sonoran region

at 3300’ in eastern Arizona (White Mountain or vicinity presumably). … Ah, but I see Tom Nash III collected a bunch of an unidentified species of Stereocaulon from Veracruz, Puebla, Oaxaca, etc. at high elevation. Okay, so “they” know about this thing, but it doesn’t seem to have a name yet.
