HABITAT oldgrowth chaparral and conglomerate outcrops at top of high transverse ridge; SUBSTRATE north face of conglomerate outcrop on top of ridge; ASPECT shaded; NOTES whitish subsquamulose crust, clustered flexuous lecideine apothecia, rims black thin even contorted, disks blackish red brown epruinose contorted, thallus K+y C- KC- UV- 350-375nm, epihymenium brown POL- clearing in K?, exciple of densely radiating hyphae and opaque to brownish toward margin, algae underneath apothecia, hymenium and hypothecium hyaline, exciple and hypothecium finely POL+ clearing in K, paraphyses well-branched and not separating easily even in K, asci with KI+ blue thollus and KI- tube?; SPORES 8 per ascus, simple, smooth, hyaline, irregularly ellipsoid with 1-few oil drops, 10-15 × 4-7 µm (mostly immature?).

Just a cheap-o dissecting microscope and a point-and-shoot

I think this was the setup shown on my profile page. I’ve gotten really good at holding the camera perfectly stable while taking a few dozen photos, each focused slightly closer than the last. There is software that will stitch these “stacks” of photos together into a single high-depth-of-field photo. There are far, far better rigs out there, but mine cost… $0! ;)

What do you use to get the close-up pics on these?
