there seems to be really wide usage of this name, I wonder if there’s not a few cryptic species in there.

Nice photos – I’ve only ever seen old rotted ones or fresh ones from a distance.
I tried to climb to one in Central Park a few days ago but got kicked out by the groundskeepers…

i must have misread the description.
the caps on both of the observations i made today were completely white.
i guess that suggests Volvariella bombycina.

I can’t be sure from this photo, but Kuo’s site interprets that species as having a dark cap center.
Did this collection show that?
