HABITAT hardwood forest on top of small hill in bottom of steep valley; SUBSTRATE siliceous rock; ASPECT sunny; NOTES pale brown below, no isidia or soredia, medulla K+y to reddish-orange slowly, norstictic acids present under microscope.

Choices are X. californica, a seemingly rare species with tiny lobes < 1.5mm wide and norstictic acid major, and X. cumberlandia a very common species with broad lobes 1-5mm wide and stictic major and norstictic minor.
