Observation 102739: Cortinarius bibulus group
When: 2012-07-24
16.1516° -96.4738° 2252m
0 Sequences

Notes:
A very small species, the largest mature cap was about 1.5cm across. Looks very much like a Laccaria in some stages of development.

Spores 5 – 5.5 × 9 – 10 micrometers.

Regarding the host tree, Etelvina Gándara says “It is a Betulaceae, I do not sure if is Alnus (I saw fruits on the soil) Ostry or Carpinus… you could ask to Claudia Gallardo, she is expert in cloud forest trees”

Claudia says that it isn’t possible to determine the tree genus by the photos alone, but since we saw cones it is Alnus.

Herbarium specimen in the Cortinarius 2012 bag.

It must have a large range. I see it here in Pennsylvania and as far north as Quebec.

Thank you Else.

Very fitting article, exactly along the subject line of that cort. I see they have some C. bibulus in there. I have never seen it in California although that undoubtedly it must exist. I have seen it in Oregon…

Very, very neat little cort Alan. And an easy one to id to group… for a change… The connection to Alnus is critical as there are very few corts that fruit under it. This one is clearly in the group of Cortinarius bibulus. Here is one of my collections.

There is some more on MushroomHobby.
