I didn’t know where to start with this one, since it turned out not to be covered by my lichen references.

Looks more like another species

Notice the tell-tale black line at the interface. I remember not being able to find algae anywhere in this thing. Also the apothecia looked exotic — odd stain, etc. I forget what the cause of the reddish coloration was. I was figuring at the time I collected it in the field that it was Trentepohlia, but it turned out not to be. This is the risk I run when I start to get overly depserate! :)

Are those greenish islands scattered throughout the close-up photo the photobiont? Can a lichen work that way?
