Recognized by sight: free gills, chocolate brown spores, growth in grass.
Based on microscopic features: finally! smooth, elliptical spores. smaller than crocodilinus but larger than californicus. largest spores measured: 11.5 × 6.5, 12 × 7, 10 × 7.
Based on chemical features: no phenolic smell.

Recognized by sight: unusually small specimen from very dry field of grass.
Based on microscopic features: large spores only match crocodilinus, unless there is a cryptic species of which we are currently unaware. ten spores measured, not too big, not too small, well-colored. 9 × 6, 9.5 × 7, 9 × 6.5, 9 × 6, 8 × 6, 9 × 6, 8.5 × 7, 9 × 6.5, 9 × 6.5, 9 × 7.
Based on chemical features: sweet not phenolic fragrance.
