Notes: Cluster growing in mixed woods
Robust, firm
Odor: mildly fragrant
Taste: mild to slightly unpleasant
Cap: 6 cm to 14 cm wide, 2 cm to 3 cm thick
gills: tannish, sometimes with a pinkish tinge; somewhat waxy, somewhat brittle, up 1 cm broad; no bruising or staining noted
stem: very firm, solid; 3 to 4 cm long, 2 to 3.5 cm thick
spore print white
spores subglobose to broadly ellipsoid (rarely globose), spiny (small spines projecting up to .25 um)7 -8.5 (10) x 6 – 8 um
