I think this is the common Fuligo septica, but it might be some other kind of slime mold. It was growing in a swampy area where a small stream runs into a lake.

This slime mold is moving into the knotty stage and is so spread out over such a wide area. It will be interesting to see if it balls up into an aethalium. I hope you will be able to return in a day and get another picture.
